Movie News

Well, friends, it’s time to make it official: Netflix will not be making The Selection Movie. While they will still maintain the film rights for a few more years, there are no longer any plans to produce a film or series.

You all have waited so long, and I wish I could give you better news. I do want to thank you though. Your support and enthusiasm have been amazing, even with a wait that has lasted over a decade, across various attempts to bring The Selection to screens. And I want you to know that there’s nothing more you could have done to make this happen. You were perfect.

Of course, if anything ever changes, I will let you know. For now, there is no Selection film.

It's Tour Time!

A Thousand Heartbeats has a cover!!!!

My beloved court, A Thousand Heartbeats has a cover! I, for one, am in love. Take a look:

Also, I can finally share the official description of the book as shown on Barnes and Noble:

“#1 New York Times bestselling author of The Selection series Kiera Cass is back with her most epic novel yet—a sweeping enemies-to-lovers standalone romance.

“Love has a sound. It sounds like a thousand heartbeats happening at the same time.”

Princess Annika has lived a life of comfort—but no amount of luxuries can change the fact that her life isn’t her own to control. The king, once her loving father, has gone cold, and Annika will soon be forced into a loveless marriage for political gain.

Miles away, small comforts are few and far between for Lennox. He has devoted his life to the Dahrainian army, hoping to one day help them reclaim the throne that was stolen from them. For Lennox, the idea of love is merely a distraction—nothing will stand in the way of fighting for his people.

But when love, against all odds, finds them both, they are bound by its call. They can’t possibly be together—but the irresistible thrum of a thousand heartbeats won’t let them stay apart.

Kiera Cass brings her signature sparkling romance to this beautiful story of star-crossed lovers and long-held secrets.”

And there you have it. Our cover here features the brave and loyal Annika… but keep your eyes open, because Annika tells only half of the story. :)

I will be chatting with the Epic Reads gang next Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at 5pm EST/2pm PT for the Epic Reads ARC Party, so tune in to hear more about A Thousand Heartbeats. Hope to see you there!

I’m so excited, y’all. The Book I’m Not Writing has a title, a cover, and a release date (November 29, 2022)… so it’s getting real. I hope you all love this one as much as I do. More soon!

Signed Copies of The Betrayed!

As you may know, The Betrayed (the final installment of The Betrothed Series) will be in your hands June 29, 2021! You may also know that I have been working away so that you can get a signed copy of The Betrayed the day it comes out.

Tiny Signed Betrayed.png

Look! The dot on my invisible “i” looks like a heart in this one! That alone is something special, right?…Right? Maybe one that smells like mandarins?

Ok, anyway, if you want to get a signed copy of The Betrayed, it’s easy enough! All you have to do is follow the links below:

If you shop at Barnes & Noble, click here.

If you shop at Books A Million, click here.

If you shop indie, click here. Now, this page won’t be updated for a while, but some indies will be getting them for sure. If you want to call ahead and check in with the stores nearest you, use this Indie Bookstore Finder to check in.

As a note from one of your author friends, even if you’re not interested in getting one of my books, maybe take some time to order something else you’re excited about from your favorite bookstores and support them. We want them to still be there when everything is wide open again! Speaking of which, I’m not sure when I’ll be able to tour again. We did have plans for The Betrothed, but it just didn’t pan out. As soon as it’s possible, I’ll do my best to make my way to you, so we can talk and hug. Thank you for your awesome support!

I really love the conclusion of Hollis’s story (so. much. DRAMA!), and I hope you will, too. It’s been fun to spend quality time in a castle again. See you in June with your flower crowns. Happy reading, friends! More soon!

The Betrayed is coming! (And one more thing)

Yesterday we revealed that the sequel to The Betrothed has a name: The Betrayed! Not only that, but we have a beautiful cover to show you, too!

Betrayed-HC_final-678x1024.jpg

I’m super in love with this! Our Hollis looks so brave! You can see the behind the scenes making of the cover art over at Epic Reads. But as beautiful as this cover is, what I really can’t wait for you all to see is what’s inside. Here’s a hint:

Can you follow your heart when it’s already broken?

After fleeing Coroa and leaving the memory of her beloved Silas behind, Hollis is unsteadily adjusting to life in Isolte. The Eastoffe family’s affection is a balm on her weary spirit, though Etan, a surly cousin with a deep distaste for Coroans, threatens to upset the uneasy peace she’s found.

While tensions at home ratchet up, disquiet in the kingdom of Isolte is reaching a fever pitch. The Eastoffes may have the power to unseat a tyrannical king—but only with Hollis’s help.

Can a girl who’s lost it all put the fate of her adopted homeland over the secret longings of her heart?

EEEEE! The Betrayed is full of things I love, so I’m dying for you to get your hands on it. Our release day is July 6, 2021, and you can go ahead and pre-order now. Yes, it’s a bit of a wait… but I might have some plans for things to do in the meantime. More on that soon.

On another note, I’ve recently moved from Virginia to California. It’s been crazy getting settled in with a pandemic, but we’re getting there! It was hard leaving my Barnes and Noble Christiansburg behind, but I’m getting to know the gang at Barnes and Noble Valencia. So now, if you want to order signed books at any time, you can contact them! Their number is 661.254.6604.

Now, I know your next question: Kiera, where’s The Selection movie?! Sorry, my friends, I have no new news on that front. Things have slowed for the time being, but as soon as there are updates, I will pass them along! Promise!

For now, let’s enjoy this beautiful cover, and I’ll be back for updates soon!

Hugs! K

Heading to Netflix!

Well, friends, you have been long overdue for an update when it comes to film stuff, so here it is! I am thrilled to tell you that The Selection movie is finally moving forward at Netflix! We are working with the amazing director Haifaa Al-Mansour (I loved Wadjda! Look it up!) and are so pleased to be answering the cry you have put our for years! You can read the full story at Variety.

This is Haifaa! Know her! Love her!

This is Haifaa! Know her! Love her!

Do I know anything about casting? No! Do I have any idea when the release date is? Also no! Am I stupid excited? YES! All I can say for now is that things look good! I’m very exited to finally be able to give you all a screen adaptation, and I’m hoping to have even more information soon. Thank you all for your endless patience and support. Hugs! K

Making Contact

Hi friends, Kiera here with a little update. As some of you may know, ya girl is moving to California! As such, some things are changing, the first being the removal of my current PO Box. I’ve taken the address down, and until further notice, any mail sent my way can be directed to my literary agency. Address here:

Laura Dail Literary Agency

Attn: Kiera Cass

121 West 27th Street, Suite 1201
New York, NY 10001

This will be posted on my contact page so you have it when you need it. Also! Because I’m moving, I won’t be partnering with my local Barnes and Noble anymore. You can still order signed books from the Christiansburg Barnes and Noble listed on my contact page through THE END OF MAY 2020. That means that if you didn’t per-order a signed copy of The Betrothed, you can still order one from them, and they will send it out to you. Once we’re moved and settled, I’ll find a new store to partner with and will update that information when I have it.

In completely unrelated but awesome news, I have movie updates on the horizon. I know you all have been waiting for a long time, but I think I’ll finally have some good news for you very, very soon. Stay tuned! Sending 6-foot distanced hugs your way!

K

The Betrothed is coming!

Well, here she is! I’m thrilled to announce my upcoming duology, beginning with The Betrothed, which will be coming your way May 5, 2020. I’m so excited for you all to meet Hollis and company, and I hope you all have fun getting lost in her story. I have to give a shoutout to the incredible team at HarperTeen for this beautiful cover, but particularly Gustavo Marx who created this stunning photograph, and Alison Donalty and Erin Fitzsimmons who designed the cover. You can hop over to Entertainment Weekly to read the first chapter and start getting excited. As one does.

Thank you all for your incredible support, friends. Sending you all fangirl huggles! Oh, and PS. I know you’re all still anxious about Selection movie news. Hopefully more on that front very soon. Bye!

Betrothed HC.jpg

Hello dear friends and precious readers,

I’m sure most of you are aware of the recent and long overdue look at the culture of sexual harassment in the young adult and kid lit world. It’s been difficult to hear the stories of other authors, illustrators, and fans who have faced this, and it’s equally disturbing to see specific names repeatedly come up as offenders are finally disclosed. For my part, I have never faced any sexual harassment in the book world, and, because I’m more of an introvert and need to be alone after signings and panels, I haven’t seen it either. But that’s not the point.

The point is, it’s been happening. The point is, for those who come forward, I believe you. The point is, I have no intention of being a part of anything that allows known predators to participate.

From this point forward, I am refusing to be at events, conventions, and festivals where known offenders will be present. I am also making sure that anything I participate in has a solid anti-harassment policy with clear lines of what’s unacceptable and outlets for helping anyone in need of assistance. On a personal note, if you should find yourself in an uncomfortable situation at an event where I’m present, I am here for you and will always be your ally. If you just need someone to stand near so you aren’t alone, I’ve got you.

I want to note that everyone on my team at Laura Dail Lit and HarperTeen fully supports me in this decision and are helping me along the way to be wise about event participation in the future. I’m hoping this will help others follow suit in doing what we can to make our amazing community secure for everyone.

              Sending you all love,

                                           K

Tour Update

After much consideration, I regretfully announce that The Crown Tour has been cancelled. Though I seriously want to meet with you all and celebrate the final book in the series, I am not in a healthy place physically or mentally for the stresses of touring. I am so sorry for any disappointment caused for those of you who planned to make it out to a stop, but I'm sure we will cross paths down the road. Until next time, enjoy the books. All the love, K.

The Crown is Coming!

I've been getting a lot of questions about the different versions of The Crown, and since the release is right around the corner, I wanted to explain all the options and hopefully clear up any confusion about which one you should buy. So, here are your choices:

1. The original: This is just the story, as is, no bonus anything. This will be available at Walmart, Amazon, indie bookstores, and B&N and Target once their exclusive version runs out (more on that below). A great option for those who simply want the story.

2. The B&N special edition: This comes with a bonus epilogue and a poster featuring the cover of The Heir on one side and The Crown on the other. Personally, I think the epilogue alone makes this one worth getting, and if you come through signing lines with posters, I can sign them as well. A great option if you want to have every last piece of information that is cannon to the series. I’d suggest doing a pre-order for this one, since they’re only doing ONE RUN and once they’re sold out, that’s it. As you might have guessed, they are ONLY AVAILABLE at Barnes and Noble.

3. The Target special edition: This has fan art that I hand picked to be featured on the end papers of the book. Some of it you’ve probably seen before, but I can now tell you that they look even better in print! I’m unsure of the run on these, but they are exclusive to Target and should be easily available in stores. If you pre-order through Target, I assume this is the version you would get. You may want to contact them directly to be sure. I would also assume they will only be printed once and then the original version will be on shelves. So if you want this one, get it early. Great if you’re into making art for books, as I found them very inspiring.

So those are the three different versions of The Crown that will be out in the world. Now, for some follow up questions I've gotten:

1. No, there are no pre-signed copies available. Pre-signing is very painful and time consuming, so I've had to stop. The only way to get this autographed is to find me in real life.

2. I don't know what will or will not be made available internationally. Sometimes places like Barnes and Noble will share their exclusive content, and sometimes they won't. This is completely out of my hands, and the only way you might be able to learn if these will be options is to ask the publisher for my books in your country. They should have twitter accounts, so ask away!

3. You will be able to tell the difference in the books based on stickers on the cover. If you look at my instagram post, you can see them on the front. But if you're unsure, open the book! The poster and the fan art are easily visible, so you should have no problem identifying them that way.

I think that's everything. If you have any other questions, it would be best to contact the stores directly as they will have better information than I do. Thanks so much for your enthusiasm, and don't forget to wear your crowns May 3rd to celebrate release day!

The Crown

This is a bit overdue, but here is the official cover art for THE CROWN! I know you're already curious, and, YES, I will be touring when the final book comes out in May 2016. Thanks so much for giving Eadlyn a chance, and I hope you enjoy the conclusion of her story as much as I do!

The Siren is coming!

You have been patiently waiting for something in a non-Selection world, and this is it! I got the opportunity to go back and rewrite my first book, The Siren. It follows Kahlen, a siren, as she lives life with her sisters in service to the Sea, singing ships into their doom and keeping her deadliness a secret. She's managing as well as can be expected for a girl who's forbidden to speak, sing, and laugh, until she meets Akinli, a boy connected to the Ocean in his own way. And then the life she could have now, be it brief and full of secrets, feels worth risking, even if it means giving up the future she's been working toward.

The Siren will be out January 26, 2016, and here is the new, beautiful cover art. Hope you enjoy!

Book News, The Selection

The Selection Series

There’ve been some misunderstandings about exactly how many books will be in the series, when they’re out, and what they even are. I try to keep people updated as best I can, so I’m making this post for reference. Hope this helps!

There will be, in total, five full-length novels in the Selection world:

  • The Selection (2012)
  • The Elite (2013)
  • The One (2014)
  • The Heir (2015)
  • The Untitled Fifth Book (2016)

The first three are from America’s perspective, and the final two are from her daughter, Eadlyn’s.

There will also be a companion to the Selection Series entitled Happily Ever After which will be out October 2015. The contents of Happily Ever After are as follows:

  • The Prince (with the two bonus chapters), Maxon’s novella
  • The Guard, Aspen’s novella
  • The Queen, Amberly’s novella
  • The Favorite, Marlee’s novella
  • Three scenes from Celeste’s POV
  • Lucy’s scene (bonus scene from The One)
  • The bonus epilogue
  • Where are they now?
  • A map
  • Various illustrations

These will be ALL the works I make related to the Selection world. I have plans for other books (including the totally revamped version of The Siren that will be out in early 2016) and some other things I’m playing with. So this isn’t the end of my books period… just the ones in Illéa. Feel free to leave questions, and I’ll try to make this post as complete as possible. Thanks!

Touring

The Heir Tour

Since you guys have had so many questions about the tour stops, I went ahead and called all the bookstores/libraries and asked about tickets, times, and book purchases so that you would have all the information in one place. So, if you’re coming to one of the stops on The Heir Tour, this is everything you should need to know:

Christiansburg, VA: Come in early (or as the event starts) to get a ticket. This ticket will double as your spot in line and your number for the raffles we’re doing! Tickets will start being handed out at 4PM. You do not need to purchase my books from the store for the signing, but please support the store by purchasing any book you’re excited about while you’re there.

Washington, DC: This event is at a library, and a local store will be providing books for sale should you need one. No tickets needed, show up whenever, and since you don’t need to buy a book on site, consider hugging a librarian instead.

Myrtle Beach, SC: Color-coded wristbands will be given out if the event passes a certain size, so that will be determined the day of. If you’ve already purchased your books, that’s fine, but please support the store by picking up something else when you visit.

Boston, MA: You must purchase your book from Wellesley Books Store if you’re getting one signed. No need for tickets and show up whenever you like.

New York City, NY: Because the talk and signing is taking place somewhere with limited space, you must purchase a ticket. General admission is $22, and 35 and under is $15. You can purchase them through the 92nd Street Y’s website. Book sales will be provided, but feel free to bring your own.

Princeton, NJ: No tickets needed and show up whenever you like. You may bring books with you, but please support the store by purchasing any new book while you’re there.

Chicago, IL: You need a ticket for the signing line and may start calling basically right now to go ahead and get your spot. You also need to purchase the book from the store if you’re getting one signed.

Albuquerque, NM: No tickets, come whenever, and feel free to bring your own books. Please consider supporting the store by purchasing any new book when you come.

Phoenix, AZ: No tickets, come whenever, and you may bring your own books. Again, please support the store by purchasing a book while you’re there.

I think that’s everything I have as far as info on the stops and hope that clears up a few questions. If you go to my events page and click on the location for any given stop, it will take you directly to the websites for each store if you have any more questions. As far as things on my end go, I will personalize books and happily take pictures. I don’t usually have limits on the number of books I sign. If lines get long, we might have to make a limit or stop personalizing. I don’t see that being a problem though. And, while I always appreciate getting your letters, tiaras, etc., please don’t bring me gifts on tour. It’s hard to pack everything, and I hate leaving things behind! You can always send notes to my PO box.

Alright guys, we’re 49 days out! See you all on the road!

General, News

Roundup!

A lot has gone on this week so I thought it might be handy to put it all in one place for you. So, in case you missed it, here’s what happened this week:

First, you guys asked for it, and we finally got it. HarperTeen has released the music from the trailer for The One which, as it turns out, was made especially for that video. You can download it here.

Second, Margot tagged me in the Epic Reads Book Tag. The video is below. If you want to participate, make a video, label it Epic Reads Book Tag, answer the questions, and tag your friends!

Third, I may have done some normal, non-interesting, totally average readings of quotes from The Selection series. If you want to see, here you go.

And finally, my first round of events are up. Yes, I will be going on tour for The Heir. Dates and cities will be coming very soon! And, yes, there are some international trips in the works, but I cannot talk about them until they’re final.

I think that’s pretty much everything. Oh, I also saw this guy. Now we’re done.

Why your preorder was cancelled

Okay, if you are one of my very faithful readers, then you’ve probably already preordered The Favorite or The Selection Stories: The Queen and The Favorite, which were due out March 2015. And there’s a chance that you’ve gotten a notice that your preorder is cancelled, which is weird, yeah? So let me explain.

Yes, your preorder has been cancelled because the e-book of The Favorite and the paperback bind up of The Queen and The Favorite are no longer happening. At least, not in March. Why? Good question. One of the great things about the world of The Selection is that the more time I spend with it, the better it gets. It was amazing (if not a little weird) to see a young Clarkson through Amberly’s eyes, and it was a special opportunity for me to show you just how hard Aspen was fighting for America in his own words. America, Marlee, Maxon, Aspen, and Amberly have all gotten to take a turn sharing their voice, but recently, I felt there was one more character I wanted to give just a tiny, itty bitty, little moment to: Celeste.

With the timing of everything, a few things had to be rethought, and my hope was that you’d be able to have all the stories, in print, in one place. So, instead of simply getting The Favorite in March, in OCTOBER you will be getting a HARDBACK bind up with the following:

  • The extended version of The Prince
  • The Guard
  • The Queen
  • The Favorite
  • Three scenes with Celeste (that I still need to name... hmm.)
  • The second epilogue to The One
  • Some other stuff
  • Oh, and did I mention that this will be illustrated?

So, yeah, the awesomeness is being delayed. But it means that you will get bonus awesomeness. I know it’s still a bit of a wait for The Heir, but don’t worry! There will be plenty to talk about between now and then, and I hope your wait for the new (title-less) hardback will be worth it. Leave questions in the comments ,and I will try to update on Friday!

Happy New Year!

UPDATE 01/02/15

Yes! The Favorite will still be released as an ebook! It will be released at the same time as the hardbound book, so you will all get it at the same time, but not be forced to buy books you already own.

No! The date for The Heir is NOT being pushed back. Still coming out May 5, 2015!

Celeste is NOT getting a full novella. It's three scenes across the series from her perspective. One made me cry. I miss that girl!

I don't have a full list of the other content at the moment. We're picking a choosing things. More soon!

The epilogue is the same one you read at MoreSelection.com, just in print now. And this is the same version of The Prince that is in The Selection Stories: The Prince and The Guard, which has 2 more chapters than the e-version.

Yes! Eventually this will be out in paperback, so if you want to wait so it matches the rest of your set, no worries.

If you haven't preordered anything yet, you can still get this. It will be available in October.

I'm assuming this will all be available as an ebook as well in October. Not sure how illustrations will translate (I don't really eread, so I don't know much about it) but I will keep you posted on this one.

No! I'm not illustrating! And no news as to who is or what exactly will be illustrated. Updates on that once it's available.

International readers! You will (probably) get this in some form or another. Several countries already bought the rights to the two new novellas, so we're scrambling to change wording/deals and make sure you get everything. That stuff is out of my hands! I'll keep you posted.

No, I don't think there will be any more novellas or short stories after this. I think I'll be done.

Finally, this was done in partnership with my publisher. I don't make all the calls, and I'm certainly not trying to rip you off. If you feel uncomfortable buying the new book, I encourage you to borrow it from a library or friend. I respect that.

Book News, General, The Heir

As 2014 draws to a close...

I want to give you guys a few updates, but first let me say thanks. 2014 was the craziest and awesomest year I've had since I began the journey of publishing The Selection back in 2010. I saw the #1 spot on the NYT list for a second time (something that I though was IMPOSSIBLE!), traveled to new countries, did my first ever solo tour, and got to extend the Selection Series by TWO MORE BOOKS!

These things only happened because of you. And I'm so, so grateful that you guys are as excited about the people in my head as I am. Trust me when I say there are lots of exciting things coming in the new year, and I can't wait to share them with you. For now, I just wanted to make you aware of two things:

First, in case you've missed it, Selection jewelry now exists! Viviane Hebel, who has done some excellent work with other bookish jewelry has added America's songbird necklace, the northstar necklace, Maxon's bracelet, and the engagement ring to her collection. People have been sending in pics, and they look spectacular! Please tweet photos at me if you get something yourself.

Second, the holidays are upon us. With The Heir just around the corner, I thought it might be time for you to get to know the new voice in my head. So here, as a little present from me to you, are the opening lines of The Heir. Enjoy!

Merry Christmas, nerds. I love you!

Things You Must Know About The Heir

First of all, if you've somehow missed my screaming today, let me inform you that THE HEIR HAS A COVER AHHHHHH! Head over to Entertainment Weekly to see it in all its glory!

Second, you now know our heir's name! It's Eadlyn. There's already been a little confusion, so let me help you out here: It's prounounced EED-len. And, yes, Eadlyn is telling the story. If you look at the cover (and watch the awesome video of how it was made) you can kind of see that she is not the same girl her mother was walking into this situation. It's strange getting used to a new voice, but I love her for all that she is, and I hope you will as well.

Third, and this is brand new information as of this second... her twin brother is named Ahren. If you're confused on this one, too, it's pronounced AIR-en... like Aaron or Erin, but not. And Ahren, well, he may be Eadlyn's twin, but he is not her mirror, if that makes any sense.

And fourth, I have been hearing from you all day "Girls weren't supposed to have Selections!" "I thought she was supposed to marry a prince!" and tons of other different thoughts on the cover info. And, yes, that's true. So don't you want to know how Maxon and America's daughter ended up in this position? May 5, 2015, guys. I'm nervous and excited. More info to come over the next few months, I'm sure. EEP!

Book News, The Heir, The Siren, Touring

The Heir, Events, and The Siren!

Hello Selectioners! I have three things I need to update you on, so go get some hot chocolate and snuggle up for a bit… okay, ready?

First, this is news that you should know by now, but in case you’ve missed it, we finally know if Maxon and America are having a boy or a girl. Turns out… it’s both! Yes, we have Schreave twins coming! And as far as who will be born first, it’s our baby girl. What does that mean? How will her/their future unfold? Well, that’s all to come. For now, hope you’re excited to know about the babies, and, of course, stay tuned for more Heir related news coming soon!

Second, the year is starting to wind down, and I have a handful of final events on the horizon. First, I have a visit to Costco in Winston-Salem, NC this weekend. It’s a bit of an interesting situation, so click here for info you might need if you’re coming. I’ll also be heading to the Netherlands as well as YallFest in November. Once I have my final schedule for these trips, I’ll post them on my Events page.

And, finally, some news I’ve been DYING to share! If you’ve recently tried to get a copy of The Siren, you might have noticed it’s kind of impossible. And that’s because IT’S BEING RE-RELEASED THROUGH HARPERTEEN! What does this mean, exactly? Well, first, it means you can't get a copy right now. But mostly it means I get to go back through with my editor and make it the story I always hoped it could be. It will sparkle in ways I couldn’t make it on my own, and that makes me crazy happy! It will also be released in hardback with a new cover and some bonus material for the fancy new bind up! We don’t have a solid release date yet, but it’s tentatively Winter 2016. So early 2016ish. I can’t tell you how happy this makes me. I’m still in love with Kahlen, Akinli, and even the Ocean herself, so I’m thrilled that it will be more polished and available in stores in just about a year.

So, that’s everything I can share for now! Which is a shame because there are even more awesome things happening behind the scenes that I can’t wait to tell you about. Hopefully soon! Later, nerds!
